Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week; Steer calves 300-350 lbs were 15.00 higher and 350-450 lbs sold sharply higher while 450-600 lbs were 14.00-15.00 higher instances steady. Feeder steers 600-700 lbs sold steady to 10.00 higher while 700-800 lbs were steady to 1.00 lower and 900-950 lbs were 12.00 higher. Heifer calves 350-400 lbs sold 8.00 higher and 400-450 lbs and 500-550 lbs were sharply higher while 450-500 lbs and 550-600 lbs sold 10.00 higher. Feeder heifers were steady to 1.00 higher with the exception of 650-700 lbs selling 11.00 lower. Trade was active with good demand on lower numbers. Slaughter cows sold steady to 12.00 higher and slaughter bulls were 12.00 higher. Market was very strong with excellent buyer attendance.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
