Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week; Steer calves 300-500 lbs sold sharply higher and 500-600 lbs were 17.00-21.00 higher. Feeder steers 600-700 lbs sold 15.00 higher while 700-900 lbs were 8.00-13.00 higher. Heifer calves 300-350 lbs sold sharply higher and 350-400 lbs sold 16.00 higher while 400-600 lbs were 6.00-12.00 higher. Feeder heifers 600-800 lbs sold 9.00-14.00 higher. Trade was very active on larger numbers with very good demand. Slaughter bulls sold 5.00-6.00 higher while slaughter cows were 1.00-2.00 higher instances 1.00 lower. Market was very strong with excellent buyer attendance

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
