Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last sale; Steer calves 300-350 lbs sold 4.00 higher and 350-550 lbs were sharply higher while 550-600 lbs sold 3.00 higher. Feeder steers 600-650 lbs were 10.00 higher and 650-700 lbs sold 5.00 lower while 700-850 lbs were 8.00-11.00 higher. Heifer calves 300-400 lbs sold 10.00-13.00 higher and 400-500 lbs were 6.00-12.00 higher while 500-550 lbs sold 5.00 higher and 550-600 lbs were sharply higher. Feeder heifers 2.00 lower, with instances 700-750 lbs 5.00 higher. Trade was moderate to active with smaller numbers on very good demand. Slaughter cows sold 2.00 - 4.00 higher while slaughter bulls were 6.00-8.00 higher. Market was stronger with excellent buyer attendance.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
