Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week; Steer calves 300-400 lbs were 11.00-12.00 higher and 400-500 lbs sold 18.00-22.00 higher while 500-600 lbs were 22.00-30.00 higher. Feeder steers 600-850 lbs sold 4.00-9.00 higher. Heifer calves 300-400 lbs were 23.00-24.00 higher while 400-500 lbs sold 10.00-11.00 higherand 500-600 lbs were 1.00-4.00 higher.Feeder heifers were 3.00-4.00 higher with exception of 700-750 lbs being 18.00 lower. Trade was very active on larger numbers with a higher market. Slaughter cows were steady to 4.00 higher and slaughter bulls sold 2.00 higher. Excellent buyer attendance with very good demand.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
