Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last weeks sale, steer calves 300-400 lbs sold 8.00-15.00 higher and 400-500 lbs were 3.00-6.00 higher while 500-550 lbs sold 7.00 lower. Steers 550-600 lbs were 5.00 higher. Feeder steers 600-750 lbs sold 4.00-7.00 lower while 750-800 lbs were 10.00 higher. Heifer calves 300-500 lbs sold 2.00-5.00 lower and 500-550 lbs were 10.00 higher. Heifers 550-600 lbs were 8.00 lower. Feeder heifers 600-650 lbs sold 8.00 lower while 650-800 lbs were 15.00-26.00 lower.Trade was active on larger numbers snd demand was unsteady. Slaughter cows sold steady-4.00 higher instances 2.00-3.00 lower while slaughter bulls were 2.00-4.00 higher instances 11.00 higher. Market was volatile with excellent buyer attendance. December 20th will be last sale until January 10,2024.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
