Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last sale 2 weeks ago' Steer calves 300-400 lbs were 1.00 higher to 4.00 lower and 400-500 lbs sold 4.00-20.00 higher while 500-600 lbs were 12.00-13.00 higher. Feeder steers 600-650 lbs sold 8.00 higher while 650--800 lbs were 2.00-15.00 lower. Heifer calves 300-350 lbs sold 10.00 higher and 350-450 lbs were 6.00-12.00 lower while 450-600 lbs sold 5.00-15.00 higher. Feeder heifers 600-650 lbs were 13.00 lower while 650-800 lbs sold steady- 4.00 higher Trade was moderately active with smaller numbers of calves but larger numbers of feeder steers and demand was unsteady. Slaughter cows sold steady -1.00 higher, instances 5.00 lower and slaughter bulls 3.00-7.00 lower, instances 10.00 lower. Market was unsteady with excellent buyer attendance.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
