Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week. steer calves 300-400 lbs were 14.00-15.00 higher and 400-450 lbs sold 2.00 higher while 450-600 lbs were 6.00-12.00 lower. Feeder steers 600-850 lbs sold 4.00-8.00 lower. Heifer calves 300-400 lbs were 3.00-7.00 higher and 400-500 lbs sold 3.00-16.00 higher while 500-600 lbs were steady to 6.00 higher. Feeder heifers 600-700 lbs sold 5.00-11.00 higher and 700-750 lbs sold 1.00 lower. Trade was moderately active with larger numbers and strong demand for weaned calves. Slaughter cows sold steady to 2.00 higher. Slaughter bulls were 10.00-11.00 higher. Market was steady for excellent buyer attendance No sale Nov. 22-23. Next sale Nov. 29-30

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
