Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last weeks sale, steer calves 300-400 lbs were 14.00-16.00 lower and 400-500 lbs sold 1.00-4.00 higher while 500-600 lbs were steady to 9.00 lower. Feeder steers 600-700 lbs sold 9.00-13.00 lower while 700-800 lbs were 2.00-5.00 higher. Heifer calves 300-500 lbs sold 10.00-17.00 lower. 500-550 lbs sold 7.00 lower while 550-600 lbs were steady to 1.00 higher. Feeder heifers 600-700 lbs sold 6.00 higher Trade was moderately active on an uneven market with good demand and larger numbers. Slaughter cows sold 1.00 higher,instances 3.00 lower while slaughter bulls were 4.00-8.00 lower. Excellent buyer attendance

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
