Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, steer calves 300-400 lbs were 19.00-20.00 higher and 400-500 lbs sold 11.00-13.00 higher while 500-600 lbs were 18.00-22.00 higher. Feeder steers 600-650 lbs sold 16.00 higher and 650-700 lbs sold 14.00 lower while 700-750 lbs were 2.00 higher. Heifer calves 350-400 lbs sold 5.00 higher while 400-600 lbs were 11.00-16.00 higher . Feeder heifers 600-650 lbs sold 7.00 higher. Trade was very active on a higher market with stronger demand. Slaughter cows sold steady -2.00 higher and slaughter bulls were 1.00-3.00 higher. Smaller numbers with excellent buyer attendance.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
