Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, steer calves 350-500 lbs sold sharply lower and 500-600 lbs were 3.00 - 5.00 lower. Feeder steers 600-650 lbs were 1.00-3.00 lower and 650-700 lbs sold 20.00 higher while 700-750 lbs were steady. Heifer calves 350-400 lbs were 23.00 lower and 400-450 lbs sold 23.00 higher while 500-550 lbs were 9.00 lower. Feeder heifers 600-650 lbs sold 12.00-16.00 lower and 650-700 lbs sold steady. Heifers 700-750 lbs sold 20.00 higher. Trade was moderate on an uneven market with a steady demand. Compared to 2 weeks ago,(Oct.11), slaughter cows sold steady to 4.00 lower and slaughter bulls were 3.00-4.00 lower . Larger numbers with excellent buyer attendance

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
