Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, steer calves 350-450 lbs were 21.00-33.00 lower and 450-600 lbs sold 5.00-12.00 lower. Feeder steers 600-650 lbs were 5.00 higher while 650-700 lbs sold 20.00 lower and 700-800 lbs were 3.00-4.00 lower. Steers 800-850 lbs sold 12.00 lower while 850 - 900 lbs were 18.00 higher. Heifer calves 300-350 lbs sold 22.00 lower while 400-450 lbs were 3.00 higher and 450-600 lbs sold 5.00-10.00 lower. Feeder heifers 600-700 lbs were 2.00-5.00 lower and 700-800 were sold 8.00-17.00 lower. Trade was moderately weaker with smaller numbers and unsteady demand. Slaughter cows sold 1.00-2.00 higher and slaughter bulls were steady to 4.00 higher. Market was unsteady with excellent buyer attendance. Only 1 more sale this year before Christmas break 12/20 and its a 1 day sale

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
