Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week; Steer calves 400-500 lbs were 12.00 higher while 500-550 lbs sold 14.00 higher. Steers 550-600 lbs were 9.00 higher. Feeder steers 600-650 lbs sold 3.00 lower and 700-750 lbs were 6.00 higher, while 800-900 lbs were steady to 1.00 higher. Heifer calves 300-350 lbs were 18.00 higher and 350-400 lbs sold 16.00 higher. 450-500 lbs were 9.00 lower while 500-600 lbs heifers sold steady to 6.00 higher. Feeder heifers 600-650 lbs were 10.00 higher and 650-700 lbs sold 5.00 lower. Slaughter cows were steady to 2.00 higher and slaughter bulls were unsteady. Trade was active on good numbers with moderate demand. Excellent buyer attendance

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
