Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week; Steer calves 300-350 lbs were 18.00 higher and 350-400 lbs sold 10.00 higher. 400-450 lbs held steady while 450-500 lbs were 5.00 higher. Steers 500-600 lbs sold 12.00-16.00 higher, Feeder steers 600-650 lbs were 6.00 higher and 650-700 lbs sold 12.00 higher. 750-850 lbs were 1.00-5.00 higher. Heifer calves 300-350 lbs sold 13.00 higher and 350-400 lbs were 10.00 higher. 400-450 lbs and 500-550 lbs were sharply higher while 450-500 lbs sold 10.00 higher with 550-600 lbs 1.00 higher. Feeder heifers 600-650 lbs were 2.00 higher and 650-700 lbs sold 11.00 higher. 800-850 lbs sold 2.00 higher. Slaughter cows were 2.00-5.00 higher while slaughter bulls sold sharply higher. Trade was very active on higher numbers with stronger demand. Excellent buyer attendance

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
