Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week; Steer calves under 400 lbs had insufficient numbers to compare. 400-500 lbs sold 23.00 higher and 500-550 lbs were 3.00 higher while 550-600 lbs sold 23.00 higher. Feeder steers 600-650 lbs sold 16.00 higher with 650-700 lbs 14.00 higher. 700-750 held steady to 1.00 higher and 800-850 lbs sold 5.00 higher. Heifer calves 400-500 lbs were 26.00-27.00 higher and 500-550 lbs sold 29.00 higher while 550-600 lbs were 11.00 higher. Slaughter cows were 2.00-4.00 higher and slaughter bulls sold 7.00 higher. Trade was very active on larger numbers with greater demand. Excellent buyer attendance.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
