Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week; Steer calves under 400 lbs had insufficient numbers to compare while 400-450 lbs sold 11.00 lower. 450-500 lbs were 16.00 lower and 500-550 lbs sold 10.00 lower while 550-600 lbs were steady to 1.00 lower. Feeder steers 600-700 lbs sold steady to 3.00 higher and 750-850 lbs were 3.00 to 15.00 higher. Heifer calves under 450 lbs had too small of numbers this week to compare. 450-550 lbs sold sharply lower but 550-600 lbs were 5.00 higher. Feeder heifers 600-650 lbs were 6.00 higher and 650-700 lbs sold 12.00 higher. Slaughter cows were steady while slaughter bulls sold 3.00 higher. Trade was moderate on larger numbers with unsteady demand . Excellent buyer attendance.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
