Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week; Steer calves 300-400 lbs were steady to 1.00 lower while 400-500 lbs sold 7.00 lower. 500-550 lbs were 6.00 higher with 550-600 lbs steady. Heifer calves 350-400 lbs sold 4.00 lower and 400-450 lbs were 5.00 lower. 450-500 lbs were 15.00 lower while 500-550 lbs sold12.00 lower. Heifer calves 550-600 lbs were 1.00-2.00 higher. Feeder steers 600-650 lbs were 16.00 higher while 650-700 lbs sold 11.00 higher. Steers 700-800 lbs were 7.00-9.00 higher. Feeder heifers 600-700 lbs sold 15.00- 16.00 higher while 750-800 lbs were steady. Slaughter cows sold 1.00-3.00 higher and slaughter bulls were 3.00-5.00 lower. Trade was moderately active on good variety of numbers. Demand was good with excellent buyer attendance

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
