Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, steer calves under 400 lbs were 2.00 lower; 400-450 lb steers sold sharply lower. 450-600lbs were mostly steady, for the exception of 500-550 lbs 10.00 higher. Heifer calves 300-400 lbs sold steady, with 400-450 lbs selling 5.00 higher. 450-550 lb heifers were 4.00-6.00 higher and 550-600 lbs sold 2.00 higher. Feeder steers 600-850 lbs sold steady to 4.00 higher. Feeder heifers 600-650 lbs sold steady; 650-700 lb heifers were 10.00-15.00 lower. Slaughter cows sold steady to 5.00 higher while slaughter bulls were 2.00-4.00 lower on low numbers. Trade was moderate to active , demand moderate to good, on good supply with excellent buyer attendance.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
