Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, steer calves 350-400 sold steady; 400-600 lbs 5.00-8.00 lower, with exception of 450-500 lbs trading 6.00 higher. Heifer calves 400-500 lbs were steady to 5.00 lower; 500-550 lbs 12.00 lower; 550-600 lbs steady to 1.00 higher. Feeder steers 600-700 lbs 4.00-11.00 lower; 700-850 lbs steady to 5.00 higher. Feeder heifers 600-650 lbs steady to 1.00 lower; 650-700 lbs 2.00-3.00 higher. Trade moderate to active, demand moderate to good. High volume of feeder cattle coming off wheat. Slaughter cows steady to 5.00 lower. Slaughter bulls steady.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
