Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, steer and heifer calves under 400 lbs not well tested. Steer calves 400-600 lbs mostly 4.00 higher. Heifer calves 400-600 lbs sold mostly 2.00-6.00 higher, except 400-450 lbs steady to 4.00 lower. Feeder steers 600-650 lbs and 700-750 lbs traded 13.00-20.00 higher, with 650-700 lbs steady to 2.00 lower; 750-850 lbs were steady to 4.00 higher. Feeder heifers 600-650 lbs steady to 1.00 lower; over 650 lbs have insufficient numbers to compare. Trade active to very active, demand good to very good. Several large consignments of feeders coming off wheat were offered in the mix. Slaughter cows steady to 2.00 higher. Slaughter bulls not well tested.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
