Market comments — USDA reporter
Compared to last week, a lighter offering this week of 400-500 lb steer calves traded 5.00-10.00 lower, with 500-550 lbs selling steady to firm, 550-700 lbs sold 5.00-10.00 higher, two pot loads of 847 lb and 930 lb steers were not tested with last week. Feeder heifers weighing 400-500 lbs sold steady to firm, with 500-550 lbs trading firm to 5.00 higher and over 550 lbs including two pot loads of 662 lbs and 714 lbs traded with a firm to higher undertone. Demand was good on a moderate supply. Overall a very good quality offering of steer and heifer calves weighing 400-650 lbs all selling on a very active market. The 4 weight steers didn't reach last week's highs as the market over the last several weeks has been very active and reaching some impressive prices. Despite the CME Feeder Cattle futures starting the week with triple digit losses the market paid little attention. Slaughter cows on a good offering sold 5.00-10.00 higher.
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of
the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is
muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle
scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at
$450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per
cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the
head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a
$/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
