Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, steer calves weighing 400-500 lbs sold mostly 10.00-15.00 higher, 500-600 lbs steers traded firm to 5.00 higher with 600-700 lbs sold with a firm to higher undertone on a much larger offering with 650-700 lbs mostly yearlings and a pot load of 968 lb steers traded near 2.00 lower than last week's pot load of black steers. Feeder heifers weighing 400-550 lbs sold 5.00-10.00 higher, with 550-600 lbs on a light test selling steady to firm and a pot load of Fancy heifers weighing 630 lbs sold with a sharply higher undertone. Demand was good to very good on a moderate offering with the market very active on a good quality offering of steer calves weighing under 650 lbs and heifer calves weighing under 550 lbs. Several stick out sales included a pot load of fancy black heifers weighing 630 lbs at 284.25, 62 head of blk heifers weighing 536 lbs at 315.00, 92 steers weighing 578 lbs 324.00, 25 steers weighing 466 lbs 380.00. Slaughter cows sold firm to 3.00 higher.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
