Compared to last week, steer calves weighing 400-600 lbs sold steady, with 600-650 lbs trading mostly steady on a much lighter offering this week, over 650 lbs sold with a higher undertone on few comparable sales from last week. Feeder heifers weighing 400-600 lbs sold steady to firm, with a top quality offering of 600-650 lb heifers not well tested with last week, selling with good weighing conditions all trading with a sharply higher undertone, over 650 lbs were lightly tested. Demand was good on a moderate offering with overall quality very good as feeders and yearlings all sold on and active market. Several stick out sales included pot load 679 lb steers at 293.00, pot load 905 lb steers at 235.00, pot load 578 lb heifers at 298.75, and 5 consignments (total of 153 hd) of 600-635 lb heifers all selling from 285.00-290.75. Slaughter cows sold steady with last week.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
