Compared to last week, steer calves weighing 400-500 lbs sold mostly 20.00-25.00 higher, with 500-550 lbs trading 10.00-20.00 higher, 550-700 lbs sold 5.00-10.00 higher, 700-800 lbs sold 3.00-6.00 higher and two pot loads of 865-885 lb steers traded 4.00 higher than last week's pot load, two pot loads weighing 915 lbs sold with a higher undertone. Feeder heifers weighing 450-500 lbs sold 5.00-8.00 higher, 500-650 lbs sold mostly 5.00-10.00 higher and 650-750 lbs traded with a firm undertone. Demand was good to very good on a heavy supply. Very good quality and condition both ran deep for Monday's sale as revealed in the impressive prices paid. Calves were long timed weaned with shots. Very good offering of yearlings, with a dozen pot loads and several part loads with several stick-out sales including 62 hd steers weighing 535 lbs at 343.00, pot load steers 671 lbs 284.25, three pot loads steers 749-762 lbs selling from 261.00-264.25, two pot loads steers 915 lbs 235.85 all selling on and active market. Slaughter cows sold steady.
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of
the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is
muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle
scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at
$450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per
cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the
head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a
$/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
