Compare to last week's much larger offering and very active market steer calves under 500 lbs didn't reach last weeks highs as numbers and overall quality were lacking but sold with a weak to steady undertone, 500-550 lbs traded mostly steady with 550-600 lbs and 650-800 lbs steers sold 3.00-8.00 higher, spots 10.00 higher, 600-650 lbs sold steady to firm and over 750 lbs traded with a firm undertone. Feeder heifers weighing 400-500 lbs sold steady to firm, 500-700 lbs sold 3.00-7.00 higher, spots 10.00 higher and over 700 lbs on limited sales traded with a steady to firm undertone. Demand was good on a moderate offering. Heifer calves weighing 450-600 lbs sold on and active market with a couple of stick-out sales of a pot load 552 lbs fancy blks at 301.25 and a pot load 585 lbs thin blks at 286.25 and several packages of thin/fancy blks weighing 500-535 lbs from 312.00-325.00. Demand was very good on 650-750 lbs steers all selling on a very active market. Overall quality and condition was very good on feeders with calves long time weaned and with shots made for and active market. Slaughter cows on a nice offering sold 3.00-8.00 higher.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Where do these numbers come from?

From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
