Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, steer calves weighing 450-600 lbs sold fully steady to firm, with 600-750 lbs selling 8.00-12.00 higher, with most advance on the 650-750 lb steers with several packages and groups of 700-750 lbs trading 15.00 higher, over 750 lbs sold with a firm to higher undertone on limited comparisons. Feeder heifers weighing 450-600 lbs sold 12.00-20.00 higher, 600-700 lbs sold 3.00-9.00 higher and over 700 lbs sold with a higher undertone. Demand was good on a heavy supply with many top quality calves in the offering weaned and with shots all sold on a very active market along with the yearlings. Several stick out sales especially on the heifer calves with several lots and groups of 450-535 lb heifers all selling north of 3.00 per lb., a part load of 621 lb heifers sold at 269.50. Slaughter cows sold steady to firm.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
