Compared to last week, steer calves weighing 450-550 lbs sold steady with 550-650 lbs lightly tested with last week's much larger offering and overall better quality, two pot loads of 865-875 lb yearling steers sold steady to 2.00 lower on last week's very active market. Feeder heifers weighing 450-650 lbs sold steady to 5.00 higher with weights over 650 lbs very lightly tested. Demand was moderate to good as receipts were once again heavy although this being the first sale in nine weeks that was under 3,000 head. Overall quality was average to good best on the 450-550 lb steers and 450-650 lb heifers, two pot loads of 850-900 lb steers sold with good demand just didn't reach last week's highs along with a pot load of 925 lb steers. Slaughter cows sold 4.00-6.00 lower.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
