Compared to last week, another large offering this week with 400-450 lb steer calves selling steady to firm, 450-500 lbs were lightly tested, 5 weight steers sold very uneven, but overall mostly steady (reaching last week's highs but trading in a wider price range) 600-650 lb steers the bulk of offering weighed 600-620 lbs and sold with a sharply higher undertone with good weigh ups and good quality, a pot load of 710 lb steers sold with a higher undertone with the pot loads of 835-900 lb steers trading 5.00-10.00 higher on very good demand and over 900 lbs sold with a higher undertone. Feeder heifers weighing 400-500 lbs sold steady with instances 4.00 lower on the 450-500 lbs, 500-700 lbs sold mostly steady with 550-600 lbs trading steady to 5.00 lower. Demand was moderate to good on a heavy supply. Good quality calves pretty much reached last week's highs with price ranges trading in a wider price range than last week as overall quality was good, just not as deep as last week on the calves. Several stick-out sales this week especially on the low 6 weight steers and pot loads of yearling steers over 800 lbs. With fed cattle prices at record levels feeders continue to catch the tail winds, especially the big yearling steers over 800 lbs as producers are wanting to replace inventory they have sold at record prices. Slaughter cows on a large offering sold steady to 3.00 lower.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Where do these numbers come from?

From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
