Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, steer calves weighing 450-550 lbs sold steady to 5.00 lower, with 550-650 lbs selling with a firm to higher undertone compared to last week's lighter offering, over 650 lbs were lightly tested. Feeder heifers weighing 450-550 lbs on a much lighter offering and quality not as attractive sold with a lower undertone, 550-650 lbs sold steady with over 650 lbs not well tested. Demand was moderate to good on a moderate offering. Demand and quality was best on the 550-650 lb steers and heifers. Slaughter cows sold firm to 3.00 higher. Cattle on Feed report was released on Friday with On Feed coming in at 97.1 percent, Placements were slightly bearish coming in above expectations at 104.6 percent and Marketings at 101.7.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
