Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, steer calves under 450 lbs traded with a sharply higher undertone on a light test, with 450-550 lbs and 600-650 lb steer calves selling fully steady to firm, 550-600 lbs sold 5.00-8.00 higher, over 700 lb sold with a higher undertone. Feeder heifers weighing 400-450 lbs sold mostly 8.00-10.00 higher, with 450-600 lbs selling steady to firm and over 600 lbs were not tested. Demand was good to very good on a light to moderate offering with and attractive offering of steers and heifer calves weighing 400-650 lbs all selling on a very active market. There were three pot loads of top quality blk yearling steers weighing 707 to 810 lbs also trading on a very active market. Slaughter cows on comparable sales with last week sold steady to firm on a lighter offering.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
