Compared to last week, 400-500 lb steer calves sold fully steady to firm, with 500-650 lb steers selling 5.00-10.00 higher, spots 12.00 higher, 650-800 lbs sold firm to 5.00 higher and over 800 lbs were not well tested on comparable sales. Feeder heifers weighing 400-500 lbs sold steady to firm, with 500-600 lbs selling firm to 5.00 higher and 600-700 lb sold with a sharply higher undertone with few comparisons from last week, a pot load of 735 lb heifers were not tested. Demand was good on a moderate supply, overall demand was good on all calves going to grass with the best demand on 450-650 lb steers. Once again a very attractive offering of steer and heifer calves along with a nice offering of yearlings all selling on and active market. Slaughter cows sold 4.00-8.00 higher on a good quality offering.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Where do these numbers come from?

From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
