Compared to last week, a lighter offering of steer and heifer calves this week but overall a very good quality offering with steer calves weighing 400-550 lbs selling 5.00-10.00 higher, 550-650 lbs sold fully steady to firm, with spots 3.00 higher on the 600-650 lb steers and over 700 lbs sold with a higher undertone on few comparisons from last week. Feeder heifers weighing 400-500 lbs sold on a very active market trading 10.00-18.00 higher, spots 20.00 higher and 500-550 lbs selling 8.00-15.00 higher with heifers over 550 lbs lightly tested but selling with a firm to higher undertone. Demand was very good on a moderate supply with the steer and heifer calves trading on a very active market weighing under 550 lbs with several stick-out sales of fancy/thin black 450-585 lb heifers. Also in the offering were several pot loads of 850-900 lb steers selling with good demand. Slaughter cows sold firm to 5.00 higher with the most advance on the high dressing and Lean cows. Friday's Cattle on Feed Report was friendly with On Feed and Placements coming in with expectations at 96 percent and Marketings at 104 percent.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Where do these numbers come from?

From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
