Compared to last week, a light test of 400-450 lb steer calves sold with a higher undertone, with 450-700 lb steers trading firm to 5.00 higher, with the 500-550 lb steer calves selling 5.00-10.00 higher, over 700 lbs were not well tested. Feeder heifers weighing 400-500 lbs sold firm to spots 5.00 higher and a much larger offering this week of 500-600 lb heifers calves sold with a higher undertone with several stick out sales of fancy blk heifer calves selling on and active market, over 600 lbs sold with a higher undertone with few comparisons from last week. Demand was good on a moderate supply, with a nice attractive offering of steer and heifer calves weighing 450-700 lbs. Slaughter cows sold steady to 5.00 higher with the most advance on the high dressing cows.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
