Compared to last week's heavy volume auction this week had much lighter receipts with 450-500 lb steer calves selling steady to 5.00 lower compared to last week's sharply higher and very active market, 500-550 lb were not well tested, with 550-700 lbs trading firm to 3.00 higher, spots 5.00 higher on the 6 weighs steers, a pot load of 730 lb steers sold steady with last week and a pot load of 850 lb steers were not tested but sold with a firm undertone. Feeder heifers weighing under 550 lbs sold with a firm undertone compared to comparable sales of kind and quality with several groups and strings of fancy/thin blk heifers selling on a very active market, 550-675 lb heifers traded with a weak undertone on a much lighter offering. Slaughter cows sold steady to 3.00 lower. Demand was good on a good quality offering of steer and heifer calves weighing 450-650 lbs, the 450-500 steer calves failed to reach last week's highs but still sold on and active market.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Where do these numbers come from?

From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
