Compared to last week, a much heavier offering of steer calves this week weighing from 450-650 lbs sold 8.00-12.00 higher, with spots 15.00 higher and yearlings over 650 lbs were scarce. Feeder heifers weighing 450-600 lbs sold steady to 5.00 higher, with yearlings over 650 lbs lightly tested. A very good offering of good quality weaned steer calves sold on a very active market and reached price levels not seen here for over a month sold with good demand on a moderate offering. Heifer calves sold with moderate to good demand and did not have the aggressive advances as steers. Slaughter cows sold firm to 5.00 higher, with the most advance on the boning cows. CME Cattle futures started the week in the red with triple digit losses along with grain market also in the red with corn mostly 5 to 9 cents lower. This having little effect on the cattle market as last week's fed cattle market advanced to 140.00 has the feeder cattle market on a positive outlook.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Where do these numbers come from?

From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
