Compared to last week, steer calves weighing 450-500 lbs sold steady to 2.00 higher on a light test, with 500-650 lb steer calves selling steady to 5.00 higher, 700-800 lb steers were not well tested but sold with a lower undertone, there were six pot loads of yearling steers over 800 lbs selling steady to firm on limited offerings from last week. Feeder heifers weighing 450-650 lbs sold mostly steady. Slaughter cows sold steady on the breaking cows with boning and lean cows steady to 3.00 lower. Demand was moderate to good on the calves with a nice offering of yearlings selling with good demand. CME cattle futures found some support on Monday with moderate gains despite the continued rally in the grain market.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
