Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, the best test on steer calves weighed 500-700 lbs an sold steady to firm, with yearling steers over 700 lbs selling with a firm undertone on a very light offering from last week, Feeder heifers weighing 400-600 lbs sold steady to 5.00 higher with instances 8.00 higher on the 550-600 lb heifers and over 600 lbs sold with a higher undertone on a limited test from last week. Slaughter cows sold steady. Demand was good on a moderate to heavy offering of good quality steers and heifers weighing from 450-650 lbs with three pot loads of yearling steers over 800 lbs all selling with good demand.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
