Compared to last week, a light offering of feeder cattle this week had 450-550 lb steer calves trading steady to 3.00 lower, with 550-600 lbs selling 4.00-6.00 lower compared to last week's active market, 600-650 lb sold mostly steady over 650 lbs were not well tested. Feeder heifers weighing 450-550 lbs sold on and active market trading firm to 5.00 higher with spots 7.00 higher on the 450-500 lb heifers, with several packages of fancy 475-495 lb heifers trading with a sharply higher undertone, a light test of 550-600 lb traded steady with weights over 600 lbs not tested. Slaughter cows on a much lighter offering than last week sold steady to spots 2.00 lower on the high dressing cows. Demand was moderate on a light offering. CME cattle futures finally had a good day as corn contracts for July and December closed 20-27 cents lower while Feeder cattle closed sharply higher from 3.70-4.40 higher on the front months.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
