Compared to last week, a much heavier offering this week with 400-500 lb steer calves selling with a higher undertone on a light test with last week, 500-550 lb steers sold steady to 4.00 higher, with 550-650 lbs steers trading 5.00-10.00 higher, spots 12.00 higher on a very active market, yearling steers over 800 lbs sold with a sharply higher undertone on few comparisons. Feeder heifers weighing 400-500 lbs sold mostly steady, with 500-550 lbs selling steady to 2.00 lower with last week's active market and heifers over 600 lbs sold with a higher undertone. Slaughter cows traded fully steady to firm with spots 3.00 higher on the high dressing cows. Demand was very good on a large offering of top quality calves weighing 450-650 lbs and yearlings weighing over 800 lbs. Feeder cattle contracts closed with modest gains on Monday as corn closed mixed.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
