Compared to last week, steers calves weighing 400-550 lbs sold with a steady to firm undertone on a light test, with the best test on 550-600 lbs selling 5.00-10.00 higher on an active market, 600-700 lb steers had very few comparisons with last week and over 700 lbs were not tested. Feeder heifers weighing 400-550 lbs sold steady with 550-700 lbs lightly tested along with a pot load of 730 lb heifers. Bulk of the feeders weighed 450-700 lbs selling with moderate to good demand, the 550-600 lb steers got back all the lost last week on a nice offering. Slaughter cows on a good offering sold firm to 3.00 higher with the most advance on the high dressing cows.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
