Compared to last week: Feeder steer calves under 700 lbs sold generally steady in a narrow comparison; steers over 700 lbs were too lightly tested last week to develop an accurate market trend, however higher undertones were noticed. Heifer calves were all too lightly tested last week to develop an accurate market trend, however higher undertones were noticed. Demand remains good to very good. Offerings were light to moderate. Quality this week was mixed from plain to attractive. Almost all calves were weaned over 50 days and were in mostly light flesh. Package sizes were mostly small to moderate with a few partial load lots on offer. Market activity was active this sale. Weigh up cows sold on mostly good demand for light offerings. Slaughter cows sold mostly 4.00-8.00 higher on all classes. Packers opted to send all cows to slaughter this week as they showed very good demand for cows and bulls for immediate harvest. Feeding cows sold on good to very good demand this week as well. Feeding cows sold mostly 3.00 to 6.00 higher. Slaughter bulls sold 5.00-10.00 higher in a narrow comparison. Young age cows suitable to feed or rebreed were too lightly tested to develop an accurate market trend, however higher undertones were noticed. Quality this week was average to attractive and similar to last week. Many young cows were purchased to feed again this week.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
