Compared to last week: Feeder calves were all too lightly tested today to develop an accurate market trend, however steady to firm undertones were noticed on like quality cattle. Demand remains good to very good. Offerings were light. Quality this week was mostly plain to average and significantly lower than last weeks offering. Many blemished cattle were seen today as buyers sold cattle prior to this weeks cold snap. Almost all calves were weaned over 50 days and were in mostly light flesh. Package sizes were mostly small with many singles in the offering. Buyers were forced to pick around to put together cattle of like quality. No load lots were seen this week. Market activity was active this sale. A noticeably smaller buyer pool was seen this week, however buyers continue to show very good demand and bid rapidly on all feeder calves. Weigh up cows sold on moderate to good demand for light to moderate offerings. Slaughter cows were too lightly tested to develop a full market trend, however lower undertones were noticed on boning and lean cows. Breaking cows sold mostly 3.00-7.00 higher as feeding buyers and slaughter buys bid aggressively on all fleshy cows. Feeding cow sold on good to very good demand. Feeding cows sold mostly steady to 2.00 higher. All cows were pushing moderate to heavy amounts of fill today. Slaughter bulls sold generally steady in a narrow comparison. Young age cows suitable to feed or rebreed were too lightly tested to develop an accurate market trend, however steady to higher undertones were noticed. Quality this week was average to attractive and better overall than last week.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Where do these numbers come from?

From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
