Compared to last Thursday, stocker and feeder steers less than 600 lbs 1.00-4.00 lower. 600-650 lbs 4.00-8.00 higher. 650-750 2.00-6.00 lower. Stocker and feeder heifers 2.00-5.00 lower. Feeder cattle futures closed the Thursday session $0.70 to $1.62 weaker. The CME Feeder Cattle Index for 1/18 was down by $1.96 to $179.09. Slaughter cows 1.00-2.00 lower. Slaughter bulls firm. Trade active with good demand. Analyst estimates ahead of Friday's CoF report down 3.2% from Jan '22's inventory. The full range of estimates in a Reuters poll ran from a 3.5% to a 2.6% drop. Placements are expected to be 9% lower on average, following Dec 2021's record placement. December marketings average 3.3% below Dec '21.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
