Market comments — USDA reporter
Compared to last Thursday, not enough stocker or feeder cattle for accurate trends. Feeder cattle futures are trading higher through midday with gains of as much as 67 cents so far. The CME Feeder Cattle Index for 12/20 was 13 cents higher to $178.14. Slaughter cows 9.00-13.00 higher. Slaughter bulls firm. Trade very active with very good demand. Weekly FAS data showed 4,518 MT of beef was sold for '22 export during the week that ended 12/15. Japan was the top buyer with 3.5k MT for 2022 delivery, and 2.6k MT for 2023 delivery. The week's total 2023 sales were 7.2k MT for a forward book of 50,889 MT. That trails last year's forward book by 18%.
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of
the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is
muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle
scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at
$450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per
cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the
head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a
$/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
Where do these numbers come from?
From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News —
federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the
official USDA document at the top of the page.
