Compared to last Thursday, stocker steers and heifers less than 550 lbs steady to 2.00 higher, over 550 lbs weak in a light test. Buyer attendance was light. CME Feeders settled about $1.50 under their day's high with $0.05 to $0.90 losses on the board. Slaughter cows 10.00-12.00 lower as supply exceeds demand. Slaughter bulls weak in a light test with an interest out of the market for cows and bulls. Trade active with light to moderate demand. Weekly Export Sales data showed 16,351 MT of beef bookings for the week that ended 9/29. South Korea was the top buyer with 6k MT. Beef exports were listed at 18,360 MT, mostly to South Korea and Japan. Total beef shipments for the year remain at record pace with 719,408 MT shipped through 9/29.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
