Compared to last Thursday, Stocker and feeder cattle weak in a light test. Buyer attendance was light. Front month feeder cattle futures ended the day with a 2 cent gain in Sep going into next Thursday's expiration. The other front months closed $1.25 to $2.27 lower. The 9/21 CME Feeder Cattle Index was $179.75 after a $1.65 bounce. Slaughter cows were uneven Boners 3.00-4.00 higher, Lean 4.00-5.00 lower. More cows are showing up at local sale barns. Buyer attendance was light. Trade active with light to moderate demand. FAS reported beef export sales from the week that ended 9/15 were 15,193 MT. That was even to slightly above las week and was just 4% lighter yr/yr. China was the top buyer. Beef exports from the report were 22% higher wk/wk to 18,621 MT. South Korea and China were the top destinations.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
