Market comments — USDA reporter

LaFayette - No trends could be established this week due to this sale being closed in observance of the Independence Day Holiday. Offerings also included 1244 head sold on video. The video sale report can be seen at the following link: https://www.ams.usda.gov/mnreports/ams_3467.pdf Savannah - Compared to the same sale last week, Slaughter cows 1.00 to 3.00 higher. Slaughter bulls steady. Steers under 500 lbs steady to 5.00 higher, over 500 lbs steady. Heifers mostly steady with 500 to 600 lbs 2.00 to 5.00 higher. Bulls mostly steady. Quality fair to fancy. Demand good. Sweetwater - No comparisons available due to reporter absence last week.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
