Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to the last sale: All classes lightly tested for Current FOB trade. Few feeder steers were 2.00-6.00 higher. Not enough to test on feeder heifers or steer and heifer calves. Demand moderate to good but seller interest moderate at best. Cattle futures back on the roller coaster leaving buyers a little cautious. Some rain is moving across the middle of the country and will put a slight dent in the drought. Supply included 65 percent South Central; 16 percent North Central; 9 percent South East; 9 percent from the West and <1 percent from the North East. Deliveries are current through October 2026. Current delivery is 14 days from the last day of the video and is up to and including March 19, 2026.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
