Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to the last sale 02-06-2026: Bulk of the sales in the South Central Region. Feeder steers sold 5.00-10.00 higher. Steer calves sold 10.00-20.00 higher. Feeder heifers and heifer calves not well tested for Current FOB sales. Demand and seller interest moderate to good. Slaughter cattle trades saw record prices last week in Texas and Kansas with bulk of the trade at 248.00. This higher market, along with continued lighter numbers is fueling demand for feeder cattle. Supply included 72 percent South Central; 16 percent North Central; 9 percent South East; 2 percent from the West and 1 percent from the North East. Deliveries are current through October 2026. Current delivery is 14 days from the last day of the video and is up to and including March 5, 2026.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
