Compared to last week: Feeder steers 500 - 600 lbs were 18.00 to 20.00 higher. The other feeder steer weights are just beginning to develop a market trend, as last week's numbers in some weights were low, but prices were trending higher in those weights as well. Heifers 450- 600 lbs were 15.00 higher. Other weights were also trending higher, with limited comparisons from the previous week. A large offering of both yearlings and spring calves this week, with fully vaccinated or spring vaccinated load lots and large packages. Market was good on this sale barns first big fall run calf sale, with good demand. Next week's spring calf special is on October 14th, and over 6000 calves are expected.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
