Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week: Steer calves under 450 lbs steady to 4.00 higher, 450-500 lbs 5.00 to 10.00 higher, over 500 lbs 2.00 to 5.00 higher with a few stances of 7.00 to 10.00 higher. Heifer calves under 550 lbs steady to 3.00 higher, over 550 lbs 3.00 to 6.00 higher. Yearling feeder steers last week were scarce, yearling heifers steady to 3.00 higher except instances of 5.00 lower on 850-900 lbs. Very good demand for this large offering of spring born calves. The market was active with more buyers present this week who were wanting to buy these high quality calves while they are available. Still quite a few consignments of cattle needing fall booster shots, buyers were more discriminating on these cattle as discounts of 5.00 to 10.00/cwt were seen at times. The discount was most severe on those calves that only received a 7 way shot in the spring as the warm days and cool nights and dry, dusty conditions make the risk of respiratory disease greater. Flesh condition of calves ranged from light to moderate as more consignments were carrying a more moderate amount. Very good demand for yearling steers and heifers, most notably on a string of 325 steers, as many buyers were actively competing to get these cattle bought. Flesh condition was a little heavier than has been seen in past weeks, weighing condition was fuller as well but buyers were intent on owning these cattle. Next week, Oct 15, another spring calf special sale along with some strings of yearlings again.
